Handbook of Commonly Used American Idioms Small enough to fit in purse or pocket, this dictionary presents approximately 2,500 American-English idiomatic words and expressions with their meanings. "In one's element" ... "nail down" ... "off base" and most other American idioms are composed of simple words that somehow take on brand-new meanings when they are combined. Here's a handy reference guide to them all for ESL students, foreign travelers in North America, and anybody with an interest in language usage. Expressions are listed alphabetically, identified according to their part of speech, and categorized as formal, informal, slang, or literary. Each expression is defined and supplemented with an illustrative sentence.
This Path We Travel: Celebrations of Contemporary Native American Creativity by National Museum Of The American Indian, To mark the opening of its George Gustav Heye Center in lower Manhattan, the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian organized three exhibitions. One of these presents an installation inspired by a unique collaborative effort of fifteen leading contemporary Native American artists representing a range of cultural backgrounds and artistic media. Published in conjunction with the exhibition, This Path We Travel enables readers to share this creative process. The artists of This Path We Travel came from diverse native cultures to create a unified composition of native thought, belief, and expression - one that brings together their individual viewpoints and experiences into a single multifaceted vision. Participants agreed that the installation, although radically new in form, would be grounded in the traditions of native people and based upon an older native model of cooperation and sharing. Meeting in locations representative of the four cardinal directions (New York in the east; Alberta, Canada, in the north; Hawaii in the west; and Arizona in the south) the artists took part in ceremonies and created artworks on site - later reproduced for the exhibition - designed to articulate the traditions as well as the contemporary sensibilities of indigenous peoples.

It is certainly the most un-American of American cities, creating its own laid-back Big Easy attitude from the customs of the American troops stationed there. All rights reserved. Shadid has traveled extensively in Baghdad and in Iraq`s other cities, and his book is made up of many portraits of Iraqis who share the reasons for their discontent, including lack of electricity and other services, intrusive searches of their homes, and, for many, the deaths of friends and family members. The greatest casualty, says Shadid, may be the harm done to America`s image not only in Iraq and the process toward a constitution.
